Privacy Policy
Last updated October 6, 2026
- Your location history stays on your device. If you join the competition, only the map cells you explore (not your routes) are sent to score points.
- Competing is optional. If you join, we store your explorer name, scores, friends and crew.
- No ads, no third-party analytics, no tracking across apps, and we never sell your data.
- You can delete your account and everything on our servers from inside the app.
This policy explains what the Uncharted app, operated by Something Better LLC (“Uncharted”, “we”, “us”), collects, why, and the choices you have. It applies to the iOS and Android apps and to this website.
1. Data that stays on your device
To build your map, Uncharted records your location in the foreground and, if you allow “Always” location access, in the background, even when the app is closed. It stores:
- Location points (coordinates, time, accuracy, altitude, speed and heading) and the trips, days, places and map coverage calculated from them.
- Motion and step counts, if you allow Motion & Fitness access, to tell walking from driving and flying.
- Your home area, saved places, trip names, notes, badges and Passport.
- Photo references: if you allow photo access, Uncharted reads the time and place of photos to show them beside your routes. Photos are never uploaded.
This data lives in the app's private storage on your device. Like other app data, it is included in your device backups (for example iCloud Backup) if you have them turned on, and it goes wherever you choose to send an export or backup file. We have no access to it.
Maps and place names
Map imagery is provided by Apple Maps on iOS and Google Maps on Android. To show place names, the app uses your phone's built-in geocoder, which sends coordinates to Apple (iOS) or Google (Android). Those requests are handled under Apple's and Google's privacy policies. They are not sent to us.
2. Competition (optional)
Leaderboards, friends and crews only work if you choose to join the competition. If you never join, nothing in this section applies to you.
Your account
- Account ID. Joining creates an anonymous account identifier for your device.
- Sign in with Apple (optional). If you secure your account with Apple, we receive an Apple user identifier and the email address Apple shares (which can be a private relay address) and, if you choose to share it, your name.
- Explorer name. The display name you choose. It is shown to other players.
- Friends and crews. Your friend code, the friends you add, and any crew you create or join (crew name, emblem, colour and invite code).
- Notifications. If you allow notifications for competition updates, we store a device push token so we can send them. You can turn them off in your device settings at any time.
Scoring
Joining the competition is your consent to scoring. While you compete, the app uploads the map cells you explore on the ground with your own recordings, including ones recorded before you joined: each cell's identifier (an H3 hexagon of about 0.1 km²), its centre point, the time you first reached it, its country and district, and whether it is near your home area. Your routes, individual location points, imported history and sample data are never uploaded for scoring.
The server turns these cells into points and titles and checks them for plausible travel speed to keep leaderboards fair. Other players never see your routes or locations. They see your explorer name, your points and cell counts, your rank, and titles such as being the top explorer of a named area.
Turning the competition off stops new uploads. Cells already uploaded are kept for your scores until you delete your account.
3. Purchases
Uncharted Pro is sold through the App Store or Google Play. Apple or Google processes your payment; we never receive your payment details. The app checks your purchase with the store to unlock Pro features.
4. What we don't do
- We don't show ads or include advertising SDKs.
- We don't use third-party analytics or crash-reporting services.
- We don't track you across other companies' apps or websites.
- We don't sell or rent your personal data, and we don't share it for advertising.
5. Who processes competition data
Competition data is stored with our hosting and database provider, Supabase, which processes it on our behalf. We may disclose data if required by law or to protect players from fraud or abuse. Data may be processed in countries other than yours, with safeguards required by applicable law.
6. How long we keep data
Competition data is kept while your account exists. When you delete your account, your account, explorer name, uploaded cells, scores, titles, friends and crew membership are deleted from our servers. Copies in our provider's encrypted backups are overwritten as those backups roll over, normally within a few weeks.
7. Your choices and rights
- Delete your account: in the app, open You → Privacy → Delete account. Or email us and we will do it for you.
- Stay private: don't join the competition, or turn competing off at any time in You → Privacy.
- Local data: export it any time from You → Import, export & backup. Deleting the app removes it from your device.
- Permissions: change location, motion, photos and notification access in your device settings.
Depending on where you live (for example under the GDPR or the CCPA), you may have the right to access, correct, delete or receive a copy of your personal data, and to object to or restrict its processing. We process competition data to provide the service you asked for and, for anti-cheating checks, on the basis of our legitimate interest in fair leaderboards. To exercise any right, email us. You may also complain to your local data protection authority.
8. Children
Uncharted is not directed to children under 13, and we do not knowingly collect personal data from them. If you believe a child has joined the competition, contact us and we will delete the account.
9. Changes
If we change this policy, we will update the date above and, for significant changes, tell you in the app before they apply.
